Something fun we do at our house
is give the member of our family who is having
an especially wonderful milestone,
an especially sad day,
another birthday, etc.,
the
YOU ARE SPECIAL TODAY plate,
made by the Red Plate Store.
The other china in my open kitchen cabinets is Syracuse China
in the Roxbury pattern.
This pattern was used by the Kansas City Southern Railroad from 1934 to 1969.
Roxbury is a city in Kansas.
A friend of mine had this whole set
in her home, and I greatly admired it.
(I won't say "coveted", but almost!)
She showed up one day at my front door,
with all of it, tucked in some towels in a laundry basket.
What a neat surprise!
She treasured me, and brought me a gift!
We use it every day.
(Yes, it goes in the dishwasher, too!)
And, although I enjoy and use my china,
and although I might not say it or prove it every day,
I treasure my family more.
I treasure my friends more.
I treasure you more.
We are more valuable than the sum of our "things".
Our things don't last forever.
Our lives don't last forever.
Only what we do for Christ lasts forever.
What can we do for Him today?
What I just did.
Tell someone that you know (and/or love)
that they are very special,
and show it with a kind word, or a hug, or a little email.
Let's treasure people,
not things.
Luke 12:34 puts it so plainly,
"For where your treasure is,
there your heart will be also."
